Valve train: RIO technology at the service of performance in the engine

If you follow us here in this blog, you probably know that we understand (a lot) about automotive technology! And, well, good knowledge is shared knowledge, right? That is why, in this article, you will learn more about RIO technologies, especially the engine valve train, as well as the importance of having superior quality in all the parts that make up this component.

The valve train is one of those parts of the cylinder head that always requires absolute precision, from the production and machining of each part to the application in the workshop or in the grinding machine. In addition, each part has a specific function and, for this reason, it is essential to ensure that they are in harmony and contribute to a better performance of the vehicle!

Find out which are the main components of the valve train

Before we start talking about valve train, we rather explain the function of the valve seats. In the set, they are in charge of sealing the cylinders and dissipating the generated heat — precisely for this reason, the seat is installed between the valve and the cylinder head, acting as a “bridge” that absorbs impact and high temperatures.

Then, there is the cylinder head valve, which is probably the “heart” of the composition. Produced in special alloys, the valves have a circular shape at their base, with a perpendicular stem in the center. It works in synchronism with the camshaft, in the cam or eccentric region, and which, when rotating, pushes and opens the cylinder head valve, thus allowing the entry of air and fuel mixtures into the engine block.

At this point, it is important to remember that when the valve is pushed by the camshaft, it slides into another component, known as the valve guide, which is precisely the third item of our list. The role of the guide is to guide the valve in the correct way, avoiding mechanical shims and guaranteeing the perfect functioning of the whole set.

Oh, and when we talk about the correct way, we really mean it: perfect axial movement, with all the pieces 100% aligned. Remember that it is this precision that avoids premature wear of the parts and guarantees an adequate performance of the engine. And, needless to say, it only happens when the application is done with huge care and proper aid of quality equipment.

In case you want to check in practice how the valve train positioning works in the cylinder head, our specialist Marcelo Laurentino prepared an exclusive video with a complete step by step, straight from the grinding machine! Take a look:
